Choroni & Chuao: Palm-fringed beaches and the best cacao in the world

By Condor Verde Venezuela • 12 November 2024

During this 3 day-itinerary, we will discover Choroni and Chuao on Venezuela's breathtaking Caribbean Coast. Tucked between the magnificent cloud forest of Henri Pittier National Park and the glittering waters of the Caribbean Sea lies the small colonial town of Choroni. Arriving here is like stepping into a vibrant painting - colourful houses lining cobblestone streets, bright fishing boats, the turquoise ocean, golden sands bordered by swaying coconut palms. The evenings are filled with the rhythms of the Afro-Caribbean drums. The neighbouring colonial town of Chuao, only accessible by boat, produces some of the world’s finest cacao, and has done so for the last 400 years. We will explore Chuao’s plantations and artisanal production facilities, and of course taste chocolate!

By helicopter over Angel Falls

By Condor Verde Venezuela • 15 May 2024

At 979m, Angel Falls is the highest waterfall in the world, twice the height of the Empire State Building and 15 times higher than Niagara Falls.

The spectacular waterfall plummets from atop the giant Auyantepuy tabletop mountain into the Devil's Canyon. The tabletop mountains in Canaima National Park are the oldest rock formations on earth.

Called Kerepakupai Meru ("waterfall of the deepest place") in the Pemon indian language, Angel Falls acquired its name when American bush pilot Jimmie Angel crash landed his four-seater airplane atop Auyantepuy in 1937. His ashes were scattered over the waterfall after his death.

The base of Angel Falls can be reached by boat, with an overnight in hammocks at one of the camps near the base of the falls. Another great way to see Angel Falls is with an overflight, either by small plane or by helicopter.

Venezuela one of the world's 17 megadiverse countries

By Condor Verde Venezuela • 15 December 2023

Venezuela is one of the world's 17 megadiverse countries. A megadiverse country is one that harbours the majority of Earth's species and high numbers of endemic species. Conservation International identified these 17 megadiverse countries: Venezuela, Mexico, Australia, Brazil, China, Colombia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ecuador, India, Indonesia, Madagascar, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Philippines, South Africa, United States.

In Venezuela, more than 16,000 plant species have been recorded, together with astounding numbers of fish (2,068), bird (1,384), mammal (390), amphibian (360) and reptile (341) species. Many of Venezuela’s species are endemic, with around one in two of its amphibians found only within its borders. On Mount Roraima in Canaima National Park, 35% of species are endemic, and you can see them for yourself on a Roraima Trek this Christmas or New Year.

Christmas or New Year on Roraima

By Condor Verde Venezuela • 15 December 2023

Roraima is a sight to behold. It’s a tepui, a sacred table-top mountain for the native Pemon people who believe that gods live on these mysterious flat giants. Also, Roraima remains one of the enigmas of the natural world, a place where animals that predate dinosaurs live (like pebble toads) and an area that has spots that scientists have never explored. Roraima is the original wilderness, nature’s last secret.

You can see it for yourself during on of our upcoming treks to the top. You have to be reasonably fit, but no special skills needed.

  • December 23 - 28 2023 (6 days) CHRISTMAS ON RORAIMA
  • December 28 2023 - January 3 2024 (7 days) NEW YEAR ON RORAIMA

Tepuis: Islands in the sky

By Condor Verde Venezuela • 8 June 2022

It's often called the "Lost World", after Arthur Conan Doyle's 1912 fantasy novel. By any name, eastern Venezuela's tepui country is indeed rich in fantasy and adventure, in strange and spectacular scenery, in legend and legendary treasure. There's a primeval, other-worldly feel to tepuis - huge, flat-topped, sheer-walled table mountains that tower over green savanna and forest, wrapped in clouds, fringed with the exotic foliage of the tropics, and fractured by hundreds of waterfalls. Some have yet to feel the tread of human feet. No wonder the area is a magnet for modern-day explorers, looking for new species in this unique place of the world.

In the new National Geographic documentary "Explorer: The Last Tepui”, you can follow famous rock climber Alex Honnold ("Free Solo") and a world-class climbing team on a mission to deliver legendary biologist Bruce Means to the top of a massive “island in the sky”, in the search for undiscovered animal species.

Not only explorers get to climb up a tepui. Condor Verde offers a 6-day trek to the top of tepui Roraima, a treasure trove of biodiversity. Request information Roraima trek

Unique excursion: Catatumbo lightning at Lake Maracaibo

By Condor Verde Venezuela • 3 Mar 2022

The highest concentration of lightning on earth can be found where Lake Maracaibo meets the Catatumbo River. About 260 days a year, no-rain lightning storms light up the sky all night long - thirty flashes a minute for up to nine hours, to be exact. Sailors have embraced this unexplained phenomenon for centuries, using the Catatumbo lightning as a beacon.

When Italian navigator Amerigo Vespucci sailed into Lake Maracaibo in 1499 heading for the flashes, he encountered a city of huts built on stilts. He called the floating city "Little Venice": Venezuela.
