From mid-June to mid-August, thousands of fireflies gather in the pine and oak forests of Nanacamilpa - 2 hours east of Mexico City - and light up the sky. Every night from 8:30pm, for about an hour, the endemic fireflies look for mating partners. Individually they are yellow points of light wandering crooked paths, rhythmically blinking. As a whole they are a swirling mass of light, like fairies just out of reach.
We can stay the night at Octli Glamping near de Santuario de las Luciernagas (firefly sanctuary) or at a boutique hotel in Huamantla, 1 hour from the sanctuary. The next day we can visit beautiful Puebla and Cholula, before returning to Mexico City.
