How turtle-watching tours actually help conservation
By Condor Verde Costa Rica • 15 May 2024
Seven species of sea turtles can be found in every ocean around the world. From the seven species - Green Turtle, Hawksbill, Loggerhead, Olive Ridley, Kemp's Ridley, and Flatback - six are threatened or endangered. A good way to help turtle conservation efforts is to go turtle watching, which helps fund monitoring and patrols.
A visit to Costa Rica between March and November coincides with turtle nesting and hatching season. Known as the ‘arribada’ (arrival), thousands of sea turtles emerge from the ocean and lay eggs on Costa Rica’s beaches.
Although you occasionally see turtles nesting by day, the vast majority of the action takes place after nightfall. The pregnant females swim to the shore in droves, and haul themselves up the beach beyond the waterline. There, they will dig nests and lay their eggs, up to 100 at a time, burying them in the warm sand. After seven to ten weeks the baby turtles hatch out of their shells, and as they instinctively set out on the painstaking crawl towards the shore, the battle for survival begins. Running the gauntlet of vultures, dogs, and other predators they must also sidestep the scores of expectant female turtles wading up the beach in the opposite direction. It is a perilous start to life and one reason why the females lay such large numbers of eggs, as many hatchlings do not reach the relative safety of the ocean. But those that do make it to the waves may live for decades, around 30 years for leatherbacks and up to 80 years for green sea turtles. In future years, the female chicks will return as adults to the same beach, to lay their eggs where they themselves hatched, continuing this amazing cycle of life.
Whilst turtle hatching takes place along much of Costa Rica’s coast, for reliable sightings we particularly recommend the protected reserves of Tortuguero on the northern Caribbean coast, and Ostional beach, near Nosara on the Pacific Coast.
Tortuguero’s turtle nesting season runs from March to October. Green sea turtles nest in the region from June to October, peaking in numbers during July and August, whilst the mighty leatherbacks nest from March to July.
Ostional National Wildlife Refuge is one of the world’s most important nesting sites for Olive Ridley turtles, who, along with green sea turtles and leatherbacks, flock to lay their eggs on the black volcanic sands. Turtle nesting occurs year round in Ostional but by far the best period to catch the arribada is between September and November, when the numbers of Olive Ridleys can reach their thousands. Occasional sightings are also possible during July and August. November 1995 saw the largest ever arribada recorded in Ostional, with up to half a million females estimated to come ashore.
Other locations worth mentioning include Playa Grande in Las Baulas National Marine Park, near Tamarindo on the Pacific Coast. This is a key nesting site for Leatherback turtles between October and February. The remote Nancite Beach in Santa Rosa National Park, Guanacaste, plays host to thousands of nesting Olive Ridleys during September and October.
We can include a turtle-watching tour in your Costa Rica itinerary.

Along the jungle trails we can observe a variety of wildlife, including howler monkeys and deer, but also haunting, abandoned prison cells. From 1873 to 1991, San Lucas was a penal island founded by the dictator Tomas Miguel Guardia Gutierrez, where prisoners' lives were short and treatment was brutal. The calm waters around the Isla Negritos Wildlife Refuge come alive at night with millions of tiny glowing lights caused by phytoplankton. Ripples in the water cause protons to pass through their bodies, creating electrical pulses and activating a protein called luciferase, which creates the mesmerizing bright blue shimmer. This phenomenon is called bioluminescence.
A boat will take us from Puntarenas to Isla Negritos (25 min). Here we board our kayaks and paddle for two hours through the glittering ocean, while our guide gives us some interesting facts and points out marine life.

Sloth tour in Arenal
By Condor Verde Costa Rica • 8 June 2022
The sluggish and frankly adorable sloths spend much of their lives in the rainforest canopy, snoozing, munching on leaves, and remaining hidden from predators. With their long arms and shaggy fur, they resemble monkeys, but they are actually related to anteaters. There are two main species of sloth, identified by whether they have two or three claws on their front feet. Two-toed sloths are slightly bigger and tend to spend more time hanging upside-down than their three-toed cousins, who will often sit upright in the fork of a tree branch, sometimes with a youngster on their back. Together with our naturalist guide we will drive to different spotting areas in search of both sloth species. We might also encounter toucans, hummingbirds, poison dart frogs, and monkeys.
